Celebrating National Philanthropy Month with Project Heart!

October 15, 2024

When we think of November, a lot of images come to mind. Falling leaves, crisp autumn air, Thanksgiving break...

But did you know that November is National Philanthropy Month?

Alright, it's not technically National Philanthropy Month but National Philanthropy Day is celebrated each year on November 15th. But we think it is way more fun to spend the whole month learning about and celebrating all that philanthropy does for our communities and the world! And we want to help you use this special month to ignite the spark of philanthropy in your students.

A Day and a Month to Inspire an Entire Year

In 1986, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November 15th as National Philanthropy Day. This special day is used to recognize the important role philanthropy plays in creating lasting and impactful change in our world and celebrates the people and organizations that are dedicated to thinking and being philanthropic.

We see this special day as an opportunity to use the entire month to highlight the important work philanthropy, kindness and giving has on our communities and the world.

Start the Celebration with Your Students

The word, philanthropy, is big and is a mouthful. A lot of adults have trouble pronouncing it and even defining what it means! We want to help you demystify this word for your students and show them that, simply by using their 3Ts (time, talent and treasure) to help others, they are philanthropists!

There are lots of ways to bring the concept of philanthropy to life with your students!

  • Spark Conversations: Start by discussing what "giving back" means. Share stories of inspiring philanthropists and organizations. Talk about the needs in your community and brainstorm ways to help.
  • Connect with Local Heroes: Invite community volunteers or nonprofit representatives to speak to your class.
  • Get Personal: Ask students to dig deep into their hearts and find out what they're passionate about, what they care about and how they can use their unique gifts to make a difference.
  • Get Hands-On: Engage students in hands-on activities that encourage them to think about the needs they see in their communities and then create solutions they can bring to life.
