Philanthropy, STEM and Innovation: A Catalyst for Creating Change

February 16, 2025

Happy National Innovation Day! February is National Innovation Day, a day created to inspire young people to be creators and innovators!

Would you call someone who studies innovation or STEM a philanthropist?

Do you think someone who is a philanthropist has the same approach to solving problems as an innovator or someone who studies STEM?

What connections do STEM, innovation and philanthropy share?

When we think about the STEM fields or innovation, it is hard to see where philanthropy connects or how it complements these fields of study. And it makes sense! What does math have to do with giving back? Where does innovation come to life in philanthropy? How do scientists use their 3Ts?

We see things a little differently. For us, innovation without purpose is like a spark without fuel. STEM without intention is like a road trip without a map. For these subjects to successfully create, there needs to be purpose. This is where philanthropy comes to life.

Why Philanthropy Matters in STEM and Innovation

Here's the thing: STEM and Innovation are fantastic at creating solutions. They teach students to problem-solve, think critically, and design for the future. But sometimes, those solutions can feel abstract. Philanthropy bridges that gap by adding a crucial human element – the power of giving back.

Philanthropists and Innovators - cut from the same cloth

Philanthropists and innovators share some key characteristics that make them a powerful force for positive change. Here are a few:

  • Vision and Goal Orientation: Both philanthropists and innovators have a clear vision for a better future. Philanthropists envision a world with reduced inequality, improved healthcare, or greater access to education. Innovators envision new technologies, solutions, or processes that will make a positive impact.
  • Creative Problem-Solving: Neither group is afraid to tackle complex challenges. Philanthropists look for creative ways to address social issues, while innovators find creative solutions to technical or logistical problems.
  • Resourcefulness and Drive: Both rely on resourcefulness to achieve their goals. Philanthropists find creative ways to raise funds and allocate resources effectively. Innovators find ways to overcome technical hurdles and bring their ideas to life, often with limited resources.
  • Passion and Empathy: At the heart of both philanthropy and innovation lies a deep desire to make a difference. Philanthropists are driven by empathy for those in need, while innovators are passionate about creating a better future.
  • Risk Tolerance: New ideas and approaches often involve some degree of risk. Philanthropists are willing to invest in untested solutions, while innovators are comfortable venturing into uncharted territory.

While their methods may differ, philanthropists and innovators share a common goal: to create positive change in the world. Philanthropy bridges the gap between these two forces, equipping students to become not just innovators, but innovative givers who can change the world.

Philanthropy + STEM + Innovation in the classroom

We've talked about how philanthropy, STEM and innovation connect, and what innovators and philanthropists have in common. But what does this all look like in real life, in your classroom or educational environment, and why is it important to infuse philanthropy in these subjects?

Here are some ways philanthropy comes to life in STEM and innovation:

  • Impact Over Invention: Imagine your students designing a water filter. Now, imagine them designing it for a drought-stricken community. Philanthropy injects real-world purpose and social responsibility into STEM projects. It takes students beyond the "how" and asks them "who" their innovation can benefit. This ignites passion, fosters empathy, and motivates them to push the boundaries of their creativity.
  • A Broader View of Success: Traditionally, success in STEM is measured by technical proficiency. Philanthropy adds another dimension. Students learn that success also means considering the social impact of their creations. They see how STEM skills can empower others, bridge inequalities, and create a more just world. This broader definition of success is incredibly motivating for young minds.
  • Building a Culture of Giving: Exposing students to philanthropy at a young age fosters a lifelong commitment to social good. They learn that everyone has something to contribute, whether it's time, talent, or treasure (Project Heart's core 3Ts). This equips them with the ability to see themselves as changemakers, not just problem-solvers.
Project Heart: Making Philanthropy Tangible in STEM

We get it. You're busy educators with ambitious plans, projects and goals. You're extremely entrepreneurial! We want to help you do what you do best - ignite tomorrow's changemakers.

That's why Project Heart offers a treasure trove of FREE resources designed to seamlessly integrate philanthropy into your STEM and Innovation lessons.

Here are some project ideas to spark your creativity:

  • Challenge Accepted: Code for Change - Task your students with creating a mobile app that tackles a social issue in your community. This could be an app that connects homeless shelters with resources, promotes environmental awareness, or bridges the digital divide.
  • Design with a Mission: Combine STEM with innovation by having students design and build assistive devices using readily available materials. This could involve prosthetic limbs, communication aids, or tools for those with physical limitations.
  • Beyond the Classroom Walls: Partner with local nonprofits or NGOs working on STEM-related projects. Students can volunteer their technical skills, assist with data analysis, or even contribute to fundraising efforts.

Innovation doesn't have to be complicated - and neither does philanthropy. Simply having students look at the world around them, identify a problem and then creating a solution is the perfect marriage of philanthropy and innovation. That is where real change happens!
