7th grade students saw an increase of mental health issues in their student population and decided to raised money for suicide and mental health awareness by hosting a dunk tank for teachers. Each teacher interested in participating were put on a list. The students then ranked the teachers by different dollar amounts and the total money raised through a whole-school fundraiser determined which teacher would go in the dunk tank.

High School
High School students received Project Heart in their engineering class. Students were asked to brainstorm ideas for an engineering project related to philanthropy using their computer design software, 3D printers and a laser cutter. One student interviewed her aunt who had a 4-year-old daughter with a genetic condition that requires a lot of medicine to be administered each day via a syringe. Her aunt was looking for something to hold and dry all of the medical syringes. The class was able to create a product that would allow her (and others facing this same challenge) to keep the syringes organized, keep them off dirty surfaces and speed up the drying process.
Want to see more? Kay Lannen and Dave Kleen invite you to take a look at the UNIT PLAN, the EXAMPLES, the ENGINEERING NOTEBOOK TEMPLATE, the CLIENT FEEDBACK FORM, and ASSESSMENT RUBRIC. Even without the same resources and tools, you can adapt the “Projects with a Purpose” idea to use almost any type of makerspace. Your students can use their creativity and imagination to create something good by using whatever time, talent and treasure (3Ts) they have available!
